Souk El Attarine

historic

Souk El Attarine is a narrow, covered market located directly against the northern wall of the Al-Zaytuna Mosque in the Medina of Tunis. You can identify it by the pervasive scent of jasmine, rose water, and amber, which has defined this alleyway since the Hafsid dynasty established the market in twelve forty. Sultan Abu Zakariya Yahya commissioned this space to centralize the trade of aromatics, and the market maintains its original function, hosting stalls that specialize in traditional perfumes, spices, and beauty ingredients.
