Aintree railway station is identified by the silhouette of horses galloping across its arch, a visual nod to the nearby Aintree Racecourse. Opened by the East Lancashire Railway in April eighteen forty-nine, the station originally served a local area that relied heavily on the Sefton Arms public house as a landmark. For over a century, the station was officially known as Aintree Sefton Arms, a name it kept until nineteen sixty-eight.
