Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot (National Trust for Scotland)

landmark

Preston Mill is recognizable by its unusual kiln, which features a steep, conical roof of red pantiles that sits against a squat stone mill building. This eighteenth-century structure sits along the River Tyne, which has powered milling operations at this site since at least the sixteenth century. The kiln was built with a separate, distinct footprint to isolate the heat and fire risk of drying grain from the main milling floor, resulting in the irregular, crooked silhouette that has drawn painters and photographers here for generations.
