Bothwell Castle rises as a collection of red sandstone ruins atop a high, steep bank overlooking a bend in the River Clyde. It is defined by its massive, cylindrical donjon, a great tower that was intended to be the centerpiece of one of the largest and most powerful fortresses in Scotland. Begun by the Moray family in the thirteenth century, the castle was never fully completed to its original, ambitious design, yet it grew into a vital strategic stronghold.
