Blackness Castle sits on a rocky promontory jutting into the Firth of Forth, distinguished by a long, narrow layout that earns it the local name, the ship that never sailed. Its curtain walls curve like a hull, with a triangular north tower acting as the prow, a central tower as the main mast, and a south tower forming the stern. Built in the fourteen forties by Sir George Crichton, it served as a personal stronghold before being claimed by King James the Second in fourteen fifty-three.
