Linlithgow Palace rises above the shore of Linlithgow Loch as a towering, roofless stone shell. This site served as a preferred pleasure palace for the Stewart monarchs, who transformed it from a defensive fortification into an opulent residence located conveniently between Edinburgh and Stirling castles. It was here that Mary, Queen of Scots, was born in fifteen forty-two.
