Eklutna is defined by the brightly painted spirit houses that stand over the graves in the village cemetery. These small, wooden, dollhouse-like structures protect the spirits of the departed, reflecting a unique blending of Dena'ina Athabascan traditions and Russian Orthodox Christianity. The cemetery, which dates back to the mid-seventeenth century, is the most recognizable feature of this community.
