The Getty Center is a sprawling hilltop campus defined by its heavy cladding of over one million square feet of honey-colored, fossil-bearing travertine stone, contrasted with sharp, white-enameled aluminum panels. Architect Richard Meier designed this Brentwood site to house the J. Paul Getty Trust, which oversees a museum, a conservation institute, and a research institute. After the trust purchased the rugged, one hundred and ten-acre site in nineteen eighty-three, construction lasted for nearly a decade.
