The New Point Loma Lighthouse stands out as a seventy-foot-tall metal skeletal tower, a starkly functional structure that is the only one of its kind remaining on the West Coast. First lit on March twenty-third, eighteen ninety-one, it was built to replace the original lighthouse nearby. That earlier station had been constructed atop a four-hundred-foot cliff, an elevation that proved to be a critical flaw; dense coastal fog frequently shrouded the light, leaving ships at sea unable to see the warning.
