The Santa Barbara Zoo is defined by its thirty acres of landscaped gardens that overlook the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. Before it opened in nineteen sixty-three, this land was a private estate named Vegamar, or Star of the Sea, built by a merchant named John Beale in the late nineteenth century.
