Old Mission Santa Barbara is identifiable by its twin bell towers, a pair of structures that stand out against the landscape and distinguish this site from any other California mission. Founded on December fourth, seventeen eighty-six, by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, it earned the nickname Queen of the Missions because of its architecture and setting. The mission is the only one of the twenty-one California missions to have been continuously occupied by Franciscan friars since its founding.
