The Belly Up Tavern occupies an old Quonset hut on Cedros Avenue, a structure identifiable by its rounded, corrugated metal roof. When founders Dave Hodges and Greg Gilholm secured the building in nineteen seventy-four, it previously held a failing waterbed manufacturing and showroom business. They chose the name to mock the skeptics who predicted their own venture would fail, as the business had quite literally gone belly up before they took over.
