Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is defined by its sprawling, Italian Renaissance-style villa that sits directly on the edge of Biscayne Bay. Built between nineteen fourteen and nineteen twenty-two, this estate was the winter residence of James Deering, a wealthy executive with the International Harvester Company. Deering worked with artistic director Paul Chalfin and architect Francis Burrall Hoffman to create a home that integrated European aesthetic traditions with the subtropical environment of South Florida.
