Old Fort Jackson is the oldest standing brick fortification in Georgia. It sits directly on the banks of the Savannah River, built upon the site of an earthen battery from the American Revolution. Construction on the current brick structure began in eighteen oh eight, authorized by President Thomas Jefferson as part of a national coastal defense plan. The fort is named for James Jackson, a former governor of Georgia.
