Chicago Defender Building

The Chicago Defender Building is distinguished by its brick exterior and a prominent clock positioned on its upper level. Built in eighteen ninety-nine by architect Henry L. Newhouse, the structure was originally constructed to serve as a Jewish synagogue. In nineteen twenty, the building became the headquarters for The Chicago Defender, the most influential Black newspaper in the United States at the time.
