The South Shore Cultural Center is defined by its sprawling, stucco-clad Mediterranean Revival clubhouse, which stands prominently along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Designed by the architects Marshall and Fox and completed in nineteen sixteen, the building features a grand exterior that mirrors the luxury of the private country club it once housed. Founded in nineteen zero five, the club was for decades an exclusive enclave that barred Jewish and African American members. As the neighborhood demographic shifted and membership plummeted in the late nineteen sixties, the club eventually closed in nineteen seventy-four.
