Old Joliet Prison

Old Joliet Prison is defined by its massive, crenelated limestone walls and towers that give the complex the look of a fortress or a medieval castle. Designed by architect William Boyington, this site on Collins Street was built starting in eighteen fifty-seven, with the first group of fifty-three inmates arriving in eighteen fifty-eight to construct the facility around themselves using local stone.
