The Lyman Estate, often called The Vale, is defined by its wide, thirty-seven-acre grounds that retain the rolling pastures and picturesque landscape design favored by eighteenth-century elites. Built in seventeen ninety-three, the Federal-style mansion was commissioned by Theodore Lyman, a wealthy shipping merchant who wanted a summer retreat within a day’s travel of his Boston home. The property originally spanned four hundred acres and included a deer park, ponds, and a working farm.
