Minnehaha Falls is a fifty-three-foot waterfall on Minnehaha Creek, a feature that distinguishes itself by the way the water plunges over a limestone ledge into a wooded gorge. While the Dakota people have long known the site as a gathering place, the name itself comes from the Dakota words for waterfall, though it became widely known by the name of a character in American literature.
