Liberty Enlightening the World, known to most as the Statue of Liberty, is recognizable by its towering green-patina copper surface that stands in contrast to the sky of New York Harbor. Constructed of copper sheets hammered into shape by hand and supported by an iron framework, the statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States. It was dedicated on October twenty-eighth, eighteen eighty-six, following a long journey during which it was disassembled into three hundred pieces and packed into two hundred fourteen crates for shipment across the Atlantic.
