The Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne in Pleasant Plains is distinguished by a towering, grand stone facade that stands starkly against a much smaller, modern structure behind it. Completed in eighteen ninety-one, the church was originally constructed on the grounds of Mount Loretto, an institution founded by Father John Drumgoole to house and educate destitute children. The building was designed by architect Benjamin E. Lowe to serve the mission's large population, and at the time of its construction, it sat in a rural landscape.
