Lone Fir Cemetery

historic

Lone Fir Cemetery is marked by an abundance of mature Douglas fir trees that rise above the landscape, creating a wooded canopy in the heart of Southeast Portland. Established in eighteen fifty-five, this thirty-acre site is the oldest continuously used burial ground in the city. It began as a small private plot on a pioneer land claim where Emmor Stephens was buried in eighteen forty-six. The cemetery earned its name from a single, solitary fir tree that stood in a clearing when the property was first platted.
