St. Johns Bridge

landmark

The St. Johns Bridge is defined by two four-hundred-foot-tall steel towers shaped like Gothic arches. These delicate, cathedral-like spires rise above the Willamette River, painted in a distinctive verde green that was chosen by the lead engineer to blend with the forest. Opened on June thirteen, nineteen thirty-one, the bridge was the longest suspension span west of the Mississippi River at the time. It replaced a ferry service that had long connected the industrial communities of St. Johns and Linnton.
