Middleton Place

historic

Middleton Place is marked by the presence of a lone, surviving brick building with a stepped gable roof, standing on a bluff that overlooks the Ashley River. This structure is the south flanker of an original plantation mansion that was burned by Union troops in eighteen sixty-five. While the central main house and its north counterpart were reduced to ruins and later felled by the Charleston earthquake of eighteen eighty-six, this wing survived and served as the primary residence for the family for generations.
