Citadel Mall occupies over one million square feet at the intersection of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Interstate five twenty-six. Developed by the Jacobs, Visconsi and Jacobs group of Cleveland, the enclosed shopping center opened its doors on July twenty-ninth, nineteen eighty-one. At its inception, it drew shoppers with three original department store anchors: Sears, which relocated from downtown Charleston, Belk, and the Richmond-based chain Thalhimer's.
