Charles Towne Landing occupies a marshy point along the Ashley River, defined by a long, sweeping alley of ancient live oaks that leads toward the riverbank. This six-hundred-sixty-four-acre site marks the location where English settlers arrived in sixteen seventy to establish the first permanent colony in South Carolina. It functioned as the original birthplace of the Carolina colony, laying the foundation for what would eventually become the plantation system and one of the most significant port cities in the American South.
