Drayton Hall is a two-story mansion standing on the banks of the Ashley River, defined by a two-story portico with Doric and Ionic columns on its land-facing side. Built between seventeen forty-eight and seventeen fifty-two for John Drayton, it is the earliest and finest example of Palladian architecture in the United States. Unlike other historic homes that have been restored or updated over the centuries, this house remains in a preserved, stabilized state.
