Space Center Houston is identified by the massive, high-fidelity replica of the space shuttle Independence, which is mounted atop a modified Boeing seven-forty-seven carrier aircraft. This expansive complex opened in nineteen ninety-two as the official visitor center for the neighboring NASA Johnson Space Center, the hub for human spaceflight operations where astronauts have trained and missions have been managed since the early nineteen sixties.
