The McNay Art Museum is recognized by the sprawling, twenty-four-room Spanish Colonial Revival mansion that sits at the center of its twenty-five-acre estate. Designed by the father-son architectural team of Atlee and Robert Ayres, the residence was completed in nineteen twenty-nine for Marion Koogler McNay, an artist and heiress who had moved to San Antonio three years earlier. She filled the home with her personal art collection, frequently hand-stenciling the ceilings and selecting the decorative tiles that remain visible throughout the interior.
