The workshop of Zaynab Murodova is located within a cool, vaulted chamber that previously served as a cinema during the Soviet era. Before its time as a theater, the space functioned as a mosque within a madrasa, an institution where young men once studied the Quran, geometry, and algebra. Since nineteen ninety-one, when Uzbekistan became an independent republic, Murodova and her daughter, Zarina Isomoa, have operated this space as a studio dedicated to the ancient needlework craft known as suzani.
