Old Saint Mary's Cathedral sits on the corner of California Street and Grant Avenue, easily identified by the red brick walls and the clock tower that rises above the surrounding buildings. When the cornerstone was laid in eighteen fifty-three, the city was in the middle of a Gold Rush boom. To create this landmark, the builders hauled bricks from New England around Cape Horn and had the granite foundation cut in China before shipping it across the Pacific.
