Z Ward is a massive, two-story building defined by elaborate polychromatic brickwork, standing as the most sophisticated example of that architectural style in South Australia. Completed in eighteen eighty-five, it was designed by government architect Edward John Woods to house the "criminally insane" and refractory patients of the Parkside Lunatic Asylum. The building is surrounded by a rare, complete example of a ha-ha wall, which features a hidden ditch on the inner side to provide security while avoiding the appearance of a standard prison fence.
