Fremantle Prison

landmark

The most striking feature of Fremantle Prison is its massive Main Cell Block, a four-story limestone structure that stretches one hundred and forty-five meters long. Built between eighteen fifty-two and eighteen fifty-nine, it served as the heart of what was then called the Convict Establishment. The entire facility was constructed by the convicts themselves, who quarried the limestone directly from the site to create the walls, workshops, and the imposing gatehouse that still looms over the grounds.
