The Mönchsberg is the sheer, cliff-faced ridge that rises vertically above the western edge of Salzburg’s Old Town. Its long, jagged profile of conglomerate rock defines the city skyline, acting as a massive natural wall against which the historic center is pressed. The hill takes its name from the Benedictine monks of the nearby Saint Peter’s Abbey, whose long history is carved into the very rock face in the form of early Christian hermitages and catacombs.
