Gletschergarten

park garden

The Gletschergarten, or Glacier Garden, lies within the Echerntal valley of Hallstatt and contains massive stone hollows carved into the limestone bedrock. These circular formations, known as glacier mills or kettles, were scoured out by stones trapped in swirling meltwater as glaciers retreated roughly twelve thousand years ago. The most prominent of these, the Riesenkessel, measures five meters in diameter and sits near the upper bridge of the Dürrenbach stream.
