The Sint-Annatunnel is defined by its original, vintage wooden escalators that carry commuters thirty-one meters beneath the surface of the Scheldt River. Opened in nineteen thirty-three, this five hundred seventy-two meter passage was built to provide a permanent link between the historic city center and the developing neighborhoods on the left bank. It stands as a rare example of nineteen-thirties engineering, featuring Art Deco entrance buildings at both ends of the river crossing.
