Porto da Barra Beach is defined by the stone walls of two colonial-era military fortifications, the Santa Maria and São Diogo forts, which anchor the northern and southern ends of a two-hundred-meter cove. Because this small stretch of sand sits at the mouth of the Bay of All Saints and faces west, it is one of the few places on the Brazilian coast where the sun sets directly over the water.
