Founded in sixteen twenty-three, the brotherhood began when soldiers at a local fort built a chapel to serve as a place for military prayer and burials. This site on Rua Primeiro de Março became a regular place of worship for the Brazilian imperial family, with Dom João, Dom Pedro the First, and Dom Pedro the Second each serving as protectors of the institution.
