Rideau Hall is the official residence and workplace of the Governor General of Canada. You can recognize the main entrance by the massive Royal Arms fixed above the doorway, which are reputed to be among the largest of their kind in the world. Originally constructed in eighteen thirty-eight as a private limestone villa for a local industrialist named Thomas MacKay, the estate was leased by the federal government in eighteen sixty-four and purchased four years later following Confederation.
