Cherry Beach sits at the foot of Cherry Street, defined by a stretch of rugged, sandy shoreline tucked away within the industrial Port Lands. While the area is now a public destination for swimming, kitesurfing, and dog walking, its physical geography is almost entirely human-made. In the nineteenth century, this site was part of a shifting sandbar known as Fisherman’s Island, which housed a small community of fishers and a church before the city transformed the marshland into a massive district for shipping and industry.
