The Olympic Stadium is defined by its massive, elliptical shell of concrete and the leaning tower that looms over it. Designed by French architect Roger Taillibert for the nineteen seventy-six Summer Olympics, the structure features a one hundred sixty-five-metre mast that remains the world's tallest inclined tower. Its sprawling, organic shape was intended to anchor the city’s international presence, yet the project became famously stalled by labor strikes and engineering hurdles. When the games began in nineteen seventy-six, the stadium was still an unfinished construction site, lacking both its signature roof and the completed tower.
