The Hanging Church, or Al-Muallaqa, is defined by its nave, which rests directly above the southern gatehouse of the ancient Roman Babylon Fortress. You can identify the site by the twenty-nine steps that lead visitors up toward the entrance, a feature that once earned it the nickname of the Staircase Church. Its Arabic name, Al-Muallaqa, translates to the Suspended, a reference to how the building was originally positioned over the fortress passageway between two massive cylindrical towers.
