The New Synagogue on Oranienburger Straße is recognizable by its expansive, shimmering gilded dome that rises fifty meters above the street. Designed by architect Eduard Knoblauch and completed in eighteen sixty-six, the structure was built in a Moorish Revival style, drawing direct inspiration from the Alhambra palace in Spain. With its intricate, polychrome brickwork and towering central dome, it was once the largest house of worship for the Jewish community in Germany, featuring enough space to seat three thousand two hundred people.
