The Theater am Schiffbauerdamm rises along the river as a neo-baroque stone structure designed by architect Heinrich Seeling. Opened in November eighteen ninety-two, the building hosted the premiere of Gerhart Hauptmann’s naturalistic drama The Weavers just months later. While the theater served as an operetta house for years, it gained enduring fame in nineteen twenty-eight when it hosted the world premiere of The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.
