The Elbphilharmonie is a towering glass structure shaped like a glittering, cresting wave that appears to float above a massive, dark-brick warehouse at the tip of the Grasbrook peninsula. This base, known as the Kaispeicher A, was constructed in the nineteen sixties to store heavy sacks of cocoa, tea, and tobacco before the rise of container shipping rendered it obsolete.
