The Sandtorhafen is recognized by a curved, three hundred eighty meter long pontoon that provides berths for dozens of historic vessels. Opened in eighteen sixty-six, it was the first artificial harbor basin created in Hamburg. Its construction allowed steamships to dock directly alongside quays for the first time, marking a shift away from the traditional, laborious process of unloading goods from ships anchored in deeper water using smaller lighters.
