St. Marien Dom

The St. Marien Dom is defined by its tall, double-towered redbrick facade, a striking example of Romanesque revival architecture that marks it out in the St. Georg district. Completed in eighteen ninety-three, it was the first new Roman Catholic church built in Hamburg after the Protestant Reformation. Its design, by architect Arnold Güldenpfennig, intentionally evokes the appearance of the historic cathedral in Bremen to honor the shared religious history of the two cities.
