Brandsende

The name Brandsende, meaning fire's end, marks the specific point where the Great Fire of Hamburg was finally brought under control on May eighth, eighteen forty-two. After three days of burning, the inferno had consumed a third of the city, including hundreds of warehouses and seven churches. Firefighters, arriving from as far away as Kiel and Lübeck, faced a chaotic struggle as the fire jumped across canals and through the dense, medieval streets of the Altstadt.
