Plato's Academy Archeological Park is a green, open-air site in the Akadimia Platonos neighborhood, marked by the exposed stone foundations of ancient buildings scattered among trees. It was here in three hundred eighty-seven BCE that the philosopher Plato established his school of philosophy, an institution widely regarded as the first university of the Western world. Long before the school arrived, this land was a sacred grove dedicated to the hero Academus and functioned as a gymnasium where ancient Athenians trained their bodies and minds.
