Kerameikos is defined by the stone ruins of the Themistoclean Wall and the two massive gateways that once controlled entry into ancient Athens: the Dipylon Gate and the Sacred Gate. This site sits at the edge of the city where the Eridanos River once flowed, providing the clay that sustained the potters who gave the district its name and the English language its word for ceramics.
